Rakhi Sawant was born on 1978 in Mumbai to a Marathi family. Her father is employed with Mumbai police and mother is a homemaker. She has one brother Rakesh and a sister Jaya, brother is a nascent movie director and her sister has acted in two films but quit the industry after her marriage.Rakhi grew up in a conservative family. As a child, she studied in Goklibai School, Vile Parle and later studied Arts at Mithibai College, Mumbai. Her father was against her wishes to be in the glamour world, as he felt that acting was not a respectable profession, but her utter determination to move on acting broke their family and now her father lives alone in government quarter, while her mother lives with her.
Rakhi always seems to be in the attention of the media for a reason or two. It is her skimpy outfits and bold dancing steps on stage that increased her popularity, but for the same reason she is being criticized. In May 2006, she was booked for obscenity by the Kolhapur Police, after a stage show in the city. She was let off with a warning. A month later, she was again in the news when she filed a molestation case against pop singer Mika, younger brother of Daler Mehndi, who forcibly kissed her at his birthday party, where she was a guest.

Rakhi is known to be an item girl and a sex symbol in Bollywood and is dating Abhishek Awasthi, with whom she participated in Nach Baliye, a popular Zee show. She was in Bigg Boss's (2007) house, but was voted out by the fellow mates; eventually she came back and became one of the final 4 participants. She was once seen in a gossip show Koffee with Karan where she got the award for being Karan's favorite guest.
As part of a Lions Club campaign, Rakhi was the celebrity guest at a function in Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail. She was to distribute blankets, computers and condoms to the inmates but the jail authorities denied her entry, upset with this she distributed the computers to a nearby school.
Rakhi Sawant was only 14 year old when she was offered her first item number opposite Govinda for the movie Joru ka Gulam in 2000. Her biggest success came with the item song mohabbat hai mirchi for the movie Chura Liya Hai Tumne in 2003. Another most notable music video was the remix of number Pardesiya Latest update about this bold and beautiful damsel Rakhi is that she is on the way of launching a new album where she will stun the fans not only with her hot dance items but by singing in the album.
